刘 先生 不 可以 回 家。Mr. Liu can't go home. Liú xiānsheng bù kĕyĭ huí jiā. Liu first-born not can return home. 你 几点 回 家? What time are you going home? Nĭ jĭdiăn huí jiā? You what-dot return home? 刘 先生 今天 回 苏州。Mr. Liu is going back to Suzhou today. Liú xiānsheng jīntiān huí Sūzhōu. Liu first-born today-heaven return Suzhou. 我 要 回 国。I'm going to return to my country. Wŏ yào huí guó. I want return country. 她 要 回 国。She's going to return to his country. Tā yào huí guó. She want return country. 他 什么 时候 回 国? When will he return to his country? Tā shénme shíhòu huí guó? He what time return country? 郑 先生 昨天 回来了。Mr. Zheng returned (here) yesterday. Zhèng xiānsheng zuótiān huí lái le. Mandarin is a tone language--that is, different pitch patterns actually distinguish one word from another. Mandarin has no irregular verbs or noun plurals to learn, because words have only a single form. Because Mandarin is completely unrelated to any European language, you may think it might be difficult to develop your vocabulary. However, it really is not that difficult. Why? The reason is that the meanings of many words consisting of two or more characters can be inferred from the meanings of the characters or even the roots of individual characters. So, your vocabulary can rapidly expand when you have grasped the basic characters and character roots. |
